First through 8th. grade were in the same schoolhouse . The common writing tool was the quill pen . In winter the temperature dropped below zero . The teacher arrived no later than 7:00 A. M. to shovel to the wood shed and the toilets . By nine the BIBLE was read and PRAYERS were said . From ten thirty to ten forty-five was time for the big boys to bring in coal and go for water .

COLONIAL TIMES DISCIPLINE
People were well-behaved back in the old days
BECAUSE if they weren't behaved , they would get whipped or something awful would happen like that !!! Sometimes if they talked , they would use the ruler method . The ruler would come right across their hands . Back then , if you were talking , the teacher would ask you to stand up , and you WILL STAND UP BECAUSE if you did not stand up you could be whipped across the back . One did not fall asleep in class BECAUSE if you did , you would be lifted by your left ear or they would burn your bare ankles with a magnifying glass reflecting the sun . If you were late for school you would stay in school and clean the blackboard or pick up the garbage .
There were no school bus in those days .
They usually WALKED MILES to SCHOOL with BARE FEET , but if you were lucky you had your own horse and could ride to school .

Before lead pencils , people used a slate board , chalk , and goose feathers . Sometimes they used charcoal .
If you were poor and could not buy ink mix at the store they would use , bark off of the swamp maple trees . They used copperas to make the ink thick . When they were done making the ink it smelled like maple syrup . After , it dries up quickly .
If you were poor you would probably use a piece of bark from the white maple .
If you were rich you would use thick dark paper . At school and at home it was always very important that they sharpen the goose quills .
